For some reason the notion of using random text to create characters has popped into my head. More tactile folks could cut bits of text from magazines and catalogs, mix them together, then draw three or four to use as traits; you could also use the Video Game Name Generator and random searches in Wikipedia to find text.
This would work best (using “work” in the most generous sense) with Risus, PDQ, or Fate Accelerated characters. A little puttering yielded a couple of examples:
Mister Stubbs
no one can stop the puppy lord
couch potato
Oceanville, New Jesey
Princess Gamma
salsa dancing
nihilistic hamster detective
Imprisoned with the Pharaohs
Milton
unremarkable croquet boy
church security has become a major concern
Equinox (Styx album)
Milton is fantastic. I never knew I wanted to play an “unremarkable croquet boy” until now.

Sounds like an alternate method of playing Dr Magnethands instead of writing the scraps of paper yourself.

There is something like that in the OTE supplement Weather The Cuckoo Likes. If memory serves, it has more to do with the resolution mechanics than character creation.

Dr. Magnethands is the most beautiful thing I’ve seen so far today.

Someone yesterday posted a picture of paint sample cards and called them character sheets with names already printed on them. So, when I read this, I immediately thought of that. I’ll try to cross-link later.

Here it is! It’s kind of brilliant.

Worked for me. (Just tried it.) It’s the code G+ gives me when I choose “link to post.” But if you can’t get it to fire off, the post was by Dallas M. Just look at his posts and you should see a pic of color “chips” in a rack.

Thanks, I’ll take a look for the original post.

Ole Peder Giæver , that reminds me of the adjective-noun-verb-adjective-noun structure from the Exquisite Corpse, which was floating around my head when I thought of Risus.

Milton is perfect, but Princess Gamma has an HP Lovecraft story as a characteristic, which is fun.

Ole Peder Giæver I love the player-seeded randomness of Society of Dreamers’ character creation. It can skew a little odd, like you point out, but you can always write it off as the mnemosites being attracted to social misfits and the like.

Thanks to skewed social circles at the time, everyone from Sheffield I knew in the 1990s could juggle.
