Do you have any suggestions for RPG opportunities in LA?

Do you have any suggestions for RPG opportunities in LA?

I live in a small town. I usually only get to play an OSR campaign with my wife. We’ll both be on the trip.

Feel free to suggest other nerdy things. Thanks.

  1. Should I assume you mean LA as in L.A., the city of angels, Los Angeles? And if so, are you here for only a short time? And when?

    If it’s Louisiana, I can’t help yah.

  3. Michael Bacon Bummer you’re missing Orccon 2018 by a week (it’s Pres day weekend).

Well, we have Story Games Glendale, which is pretty close to downtown LA, on Feb 6 in the evening. We play various indie RPGs (many GMless, some PbtA and other stuff). It’s all based on who shows up and consensus on the night of.

See meetup info here: meetup.com – Story Game Night in Glendale

  5. Game Empire in Pasadena will have 2 dates with RPGs when you’re here. It’s a cool huge game store with a large area for gaming (rpgs but lots of minis stuff too).

gameempirepasadena.com – Age of Sigmar Battles

Usually there’s Shadow of the Demon Lord,D&D, and other games run there. I think they use Meetup for the rpg stuff, so you might want to call or research it.

Not RPG related, but if you head out to Pasadena, there’s a cool arcade called Neon Retro Arcade.

Gamehaus, the board game cafe which Tomar mentioned above, is great if you’re into board games. I haven’t done any rping there, but I’m sure it’s cool.

    Enjoy your trip!

  7. Tomer Gurantz I’ve been wanting to try pbta. I’ve read a few rulebooks and listened to plays. My wife has not but would pick it up. That sounds good. I’ll read the meetup.

  9. Michael Bacon I’m not sure – I know they do the organized play 5e stuff and I’ve seen pathfinder there and Cypher System games(Numenera). But I’ve only played Shadow of the Demon Lord there, so not sure about anything else.

  11. There’s also Emerald Knights in Burbank which is about equidistant from downtown LA as is Pasadena. It’s a comic shop / game shop, and they also have room upstairs with tables and often have games, but a little less active than Game Empire. I don’t know how they organize their calendar… maybe check their website.

  13. If you go to Game Haus Cafe, be very aware that during the week it’s pretty easy to get in, but on a Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening, it can fill up to the point that they aren’t letting anyone else in. Out Tuesday night meetings there are never full so this isn’t a concern (except in the summer), and the environment is very friendly. They have excellent food (hot+cold paninis and cornmeal pizzas), great coffee, and are now also licensed for beer+wine. If you plan to come to the meetup, and can actually make it out there early (our meetup is Tues 7pm), I’d highly recommend just showing up whenever you can and playing board games and checking it out. They have about 1000 games on the shelf (including all the new candy). Also, David Lewis and I run the meetup and often show up early.

  15. Note: Long Beach is far from Pasadena or Glendale or Burbank.

The southern half of Los Angeles basin is not as fortumate in game stores with gaming space. I wish I had some siggestions for you Michael Bacon. I will say the War House is in Long Beach, but in a sketchy part of town, and I don’t know if they have gaming space.

  17. Michael Bacon Yes, if you are in Downtown LA, Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale are “sort of” close. I was only commenting on the Long Beach part of your trip.

No matter what, expect 45-55 minutes (at least) of in-traffic drive time pretty much wherever you go if you are traveling between the hours of 6am and 9am; 11am to 1pm; and 3pm to 7pm. That’s Los Angeles for you. 🙂 Best times to travel are before 6am (really, before 5am); between 9:15 and 11am; between 1:30 and 3; and after 7. Very best time to travel? After 2am – I love driving in LA after 2am!
