Monster of the week – Err am I missing something or do you end up with way too many history connections with 5 players? Ours has become some insane secret family fest. Including a 70 year old and a little girl being twins (I actually like that one) – apologies for the last rather poor post.

  1. Eadwin Tomlinson I think the History/Bonds/Hx mechanics in most of the PbtA games are deeply flawed. We find that they tend to, in the worst circumstance, put artificial constraints on how you play your character in the beginning of the game, or they simply get lost in the shuffle. That is why I particularly loathe the Bonds in DW. In addition to being very poorly written, players always forget about them.

MotW is a little different in this regard. Since they have no mechanical function, they feel a little less obnoxious to me. That said, yeah, I could see where, with five players, the situation starts to defy belief a bit. I’ve only ever played MotW with 2 or 3 players and the GM, so it hasn’t really pinged my radar in that way yet.

  3. I went round about 3 times and then realised we were getting a little stretched. I think 5 players is a little nuts now I’ve done a session – exercising all the characters stories in 4-5 sessions is a big ask. I’ll keep you posted!

I agree this rule should be a way of bringing the characters together and provide plot threads rather than have a mechanical effect. Dungeon world bonds don’t work because dungeon crawling doesn’t necessarily need to explore the relationships between the members of the party. It should be more about why the party as a whole are together at the beginning. The ones as written aren’t very good for resolving in a dungeon either in my opinion.

  5. Eadwin Tomlinson Agreed on DW Bonds. The game is so clearly meant to be about dungeon crawling, and then you have Bonds like “__ and I are running a con together.” When is that Bond supposed to come out in play? The answer is it doesn’t, and so how can you “resolve” it? Ugh, I hate DW Bonds.
