The githyanki because it was featured on the cover of the Fiend Folio. The shared background between the Githyanki and the Githzerai made them more interesting and I had always hoped to be pitted into one of their wars as a PC.

The owlbear because it is a bear with an owl for a face.

The humble rat: because they’ve killed more wizards than anything else in all the years I’ve played.

Displacer Beast: Because it’s based on the Couerl from A. E. Van Vogt’s BLACK DESTROYER and that awesome Dave Trampier illustration in the 1st ed Monster Manual.
Also, it displaces and stuff.

I’ve been thinking of mine all night. I think my favorite is the rust monster because it is an almost impossibly stupid creature that manages to punch above its weight due to one nasty little biological function.

“My favorite D&D monster is the BEHOLDER because they are so interesting, quintessentially D&D, deadly and tend to drive DM’s and players alike crazy (DM – soo many options to kill with, Player – aw s$%^! why must you punish us so?)

Beholder’s are so nasty! The longest running campaign I ever DM’d (2 years) got wiped by a beholder. I gave them so many chances not to fight it…

I have to agree with Jason, rust monster because it lets those pesky adventurers know their gear is never safe. Plus add a werewolf on top of that and all of a sudden all that silver equipment the players have equipped themselves with to deal with the lycanthrope becomes a tasty treat MUAH AH AH AH AH!!!
