Hey friends, looking for some advice! So my players are headed to an island with an abandoned city near a castle with a vampire Lord. As a DM, what fun surprises would you have in store for your party?

You know how in the movie Blade they would have the cases where someone bitten by a vampire became sort of zombie like instead of a vamp and they just dumped the rejects out of the way so they wouldn’t cause a problem? Bunch Blood-thirsty crazed undead muttering fragments of their old lives until they see living prey.
An abandoned island seems a good place for that since a lot of vampire myths involve them being unable to cross running water.

Luke Green Oh excellent! Thank you Luke for the suggestion. I was afraid my players are coming into this a bit quick! So if I had lower-level vampired monsters that would help things be more even-leveled for them! Great idea!

laws of hospitality. give the vampire advantages when the players are acting rude or direspectfull. and give him/her disadvantages when they act as good guests. apeal to appearence and formality even while they are being hunted and traped. apperances matter to antient and hauty creatures

Daniel Fowler Oh that’s a fun idea. I also like them getting trapped idea! I could have the vampires try to fight over who’s gonna eat who.

vampire lord uses its minions to test the heroes, if worthy then he? offers a ton of reward for aiding him on the real quest, which can be to 1-stop the real threat (chaos ooze armada), 2-permenantly leave to the shadow realm, 3-cure the entire island.

Side note, in the D&D game we’re starting there is a Lawful Good Necrocracy led by liches and including vampires. Though the description states that some younger vamps try to leave for distant parts off the throne moon so they can set up away from the eye and tight controls of the government.

A group of ghouls who’ve taken up residence in the abandoned city. They are dressed in the clothing of the previous occupants and are living as a pantomime of a real family. They invite the PC’s in for a dinner party. Of course the PC’s will be for desert.

A island, a abondoned city ? One question : How the Vampire feed ?
Aswering this question open a lot of interesting plot twist…
So the PC arrive in this land where you can find a really starving Vampire. So at first he will try to prey on them… but rapidly (after one or two bite) he could calm himself and become a really nice host. Then he will certainly ask the PC help in order to repopulate the abandonned city. After cleaning the city for any dangerous creature, the PC had to find new citizen…. could be really interesting in a campagne where refugee can be found cause of war, dragon, natural castastrophy… of course the population should accept some blood prelevement once in a while….

Blake Ryan Your idea of the vampire Lord needing help might be a good way for the players to not get destroyed from the vampires! I’m guessing they’ll be avoiding them. So if they get caught then I’m definitely gonna be using that! Thanks!
Luke Green that sounds like a neat idea! What drives this group of lawful good necromancers to raise the dead and such?
Tom Bolenbaugh Haha. Excellent idea! I’ll be putting this in the town somewhere! Thanks!

It’s a shattered world setting, sky ships and the like. A bunch of insane celestials and fiends shattered the world and now there is this Jupiter sized Shell within which there is air, several moons, and the floating fragmented islands of the former world. There was an LG Lich that created a sanctuary space for survivors. It’s sort of a benevolent culture that equates undead and the living. It became one of the three main civilizations. The other two is a technocracy and a coalition of warlords on a third major desert moon.

Luke Green OoooOoOoooo… Cool! What a neat concept! Are you the DM, or the player?

Player. I’m running a hobgoblin sky pirate from the desert world. The GM specifically said there’s almost no species that is always evil.

Luke Green That sounds awesome. We once tamed a goblin, though he may have started off a bit chaotic evil. Our paladin definitely brought him to see a more chaotic neutral path. 😄

I generally just don’t use alignments in 5e. But I generally end up some kind of Good.

The vampire lord is the good guy, who is just enslaved by a bad decision when he was younger. Bad guy are the locals who just want his castle and land.

the vampires died long ago, this castle is haunted by their vampire ghosts!

give the vampires a magic ability like shape changing (doppelganger style) or control of snakes (personal fav) or walking on walls and ceilings (make their castle resemble an MC Escher painting)
there are a lot of non-traditional vampire/ vampire like creatures to choose from too. though i might be tempted to go full on Dracula with the long fingers, giant wig and fancy cape.

Abandoned city? By the living yes. But what if the party finds a thriving culture comprised of purely intelligent undead who have come to the conclusiom that the living are the root cause of wars, diseases and all manner of suffering. Ergo being alive a is a crime and being initiated into the ranks of the undead a blessing reserved for those who understand and accept the philisofical underpinnings of this society 👍🏻
