Mythic Mortals Feedback

Hi Gauntleteers! I’m gearing up to run Mythic Mortals for Houston Gauntlet (aka Gauntlet Prime) next week. Because this will be my first time running it and I believe the players’ first time playing it, I was wondering if anyone who had played could give me some feedback. I did my homeowrk and prepped for the last game I ran for the group (A Kobold Ate My Baby), but even so there were things I forgot and things I would change if I were to run it again. With that in mind, I thought I’d reach out to our diverse and prolific community to see if anyone had any thoughts that would make our adventure run more smoothly, either for GM or players.

TL, DR: For Mythic Mortals

– I wish I’d have known…

– I wish I would have tried…

– I wish I hadn’t…

– I wish the GM had…

etc.

Thank you for any time/thought you can direct this way 🙂

  1. I’m so glad you’re going to play Mythic Mortals! I hope you have a blast with it. Mythic Mortals is perfect and nothing ever, EVER goes wrong!

Alright, now that my official position has been stated, let’s talk turkey. Obviously, most of my advice is packed into the book, so I won’t repeat the 40 pages of the GM section here.

The biggest problem that I see when people play Mythic Mortals is the fear of playing it “wrong”. Maybe a rule is forgotten, or it’s not quite clear what should happen next. Do not fear! Just keep things rolling along, and make the best guess that you can.

As long as you don’t let the pacing die, most people will stay engaged in the combat and playing that cards.

You’ll do great! If you bump into any major problems, let me know! I’d be glad to help however I can.

  3. Thanks David Schirduan ! Looks like this isn’t just new for me, but also the community (or no one had a specific recommendation 😛 ) so I look forward to Guinea Pig-ing it!

  5. Update: We played on Wednesday and had a great time! First off, total kudos to David Schirduan for a game book that is really well laid out, mechanics that are very clear and have plenty of examples, and a GM section that made me feel completely ready to have fun. Bonus points for the designer of the player mats; clean, intuitive, and comprehensive. Our players covered the spectrum from experienced (Ferrell Riley), to new but enthusiastic, and to new-ish with performance anxiety; everyone said that they had a good time. Everyone seemed to find parts of the game that they could embrace and run with. The mechanics and some monster prep made things run really smoothly with the only tiny hurdle being the need to remember everyone’s changing flaws. Really fun and can’t wait to try out one of the expansion sets 🙂

  7. remembering flaws, as well as the changing initiative order, seemed to be the only hiccups. Kristen D had a masterful way of handling the init order though, a card where she could just change and switch up the names which seemed to work quite well!

thanks again for running it, and now I’m looking forward to getting it to the table!

  9. Kristen D Ferrell Riley I’m so glad you enjoyed the game!

Great job with the init order though. I used to use a tracker, but pen and paper works so much better with my note-taking brain.

And the flaws are tricky. My group still forgets their flaws all the time. It’s easier to remember the things that help you, as opposed to what hinders you.

If you are looking to try the expansions, I have a special place in my heart for Stephanie Bryant  Excellent multi-part space adventure. It will keep you entertained for several sessions, a rarity in the Mythic Mortals universe.
