The gauntlet community never failed me, so let’s try this one 🙂
Short version: Which game for Dragon ball Z fluid combat ?^^
Due to Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Super, my mind go way back to the 90’s.
And I ponder again about running some DragonBall sessions..
2 years ago I gm’d another Shonen Anime based game, by using slightly altered Abstract Dungeon and it was ok. A streamlined mechanic where you spend dice from your pool to bring down the opposition… Since every dice are rolled at the beginning of play
We could break down the fight in ‘good old rounds’ but deal with them in a blink of an eye without altering the Narration + Roleplay. At the time I declined Anima Prime and I even considered altering Dogs in the Vineyard
This time I’d like to try something else that could handle Pvp aswell…
Any suggestion you fine people ? 🙂
I seem to recall the Dragon Ball Z RPG doing a good job of emulating the fights. Haven’t looked at it for a long while.

Never played but Exalted sounds like dragon ball Z.

I’ve tweaked Swords Without Master to theoretically handle shonen stories well, but have yet to get opportunity to try it. I wrote up a couple new rituals for things like extended/campaign play, naming techniques, and fostering bonds/rivalries.

Hmm, maybe check out Shonen Final Burst? I’ve never read it but I see it getting recommended for fighting anime pretty often.

Adam Minnie Wow, sounds awesome. Have you made it available somewhere ?

Mendel Schmiedekamp ^^ I still have the book^^ Maybe I should take a look at it with fresh eyes.
Nery Mejicano True, but good old Storytelling System is way too versatile for my tastes. Lists of abilities , disciplines/gifts/spheres that’d be a little too much. Shonen anime are more focused, simpler stuff.
Adam Minnie Swm as a game is really its own beast. It’s not about winning or loosing. It’s about telling ‘how’ and not ‘what happens. I admit SwM is not what I had in mind as well. 😉 Tell me if I’m mistaken
Kyle Simons I’ve read Shonen final Burst 🙂 And in the end, I think I still prefer Anima Prime 😉
I already discarded Fate and Cortex for that purpose^^
Well, I’m a PbtA fan. And those games are expressly tailored to their theme. I guess it would take months to create a new one from scratch ^^ And years to playtest it ^^ “Sigh”

Volsung 2d6plusCool I’m not sure what you mean by the difference between “how” vs “what.” And while it does things differently, I’m also quite sure that it’s not only its own beast if by that you mean it may not be easily put to uses other than Sword & Sorcery. Epidiah It doesn’t offer simulationist systems for determining who would win, particularly between PCs, if that’s what you mean by being about winning or losing, but it definitely can tell great tales of people triumphing and being defeated. Thinking about it again, I am unsure how it could deal with specifically PvP conflicts like the bottom of your original post states… Granted, I’m not a big Dragon Ball fan, and primarily think of shonen using SwM for things like One Piece or Naruto.
Antoine Pempie Here is my former post about the rituals and settings to use for shonen stories, most of which come from others who previously hacked SwM already: https://plus.google.com/u/0/116748546962488989608/posts/6rtKmi1BZwV

No ^^ Not at all, we already played it in ‘Blades in the Dark’ setting ^^ And for exemple, With Great Power: Master Edition is actually a super-heroic hack of Swords Without Master.
But it definitely can tell great tales of people triumphing and being defeated
Absolutely 🙂 I just meant I was aiming for a ‘different take’ on the theme.

Got it, thanks for patience with my misunderstanding.
I’ve never played either, but the ideas occurred to me this morning that maybe reflavored Worldwide Wrestling or Masks might work, depending on which element of the DB stories you’re after.

True! I thought about Legend of the Elements and Fellowship as well. ^^
