The Future of Discern Realities Podcast

David LaFreniere and I have decided to retire Discern Realities. After nearly 70+ episodes, we’re not sure how much more we have to say about Dungeon World. The show has become something of a creative dead end, and that means it’s time to retire it.

We are super-grateful for all the fans who have supported the show these last couple of years. Together, we have been able to show thousands of people the awesome, exciting possibilities of Dungeon World and other Powered by the Apocalypse games.

So here is our game plan for retiring the show:

First, we’re going to take a couple of months off. We have a lot on our respective plates at the moment between Codex, Gauntlet Con, and other projects. DR will come back in late October with Episode 59 (hopefully featuring Danny Hood, who is owed a guest spot from winning the last contest). We’ll then spend November and December wrapping up the Basics series. We’ll end the show’s run with a big gala episode (Episode 60), which will air sometime in early January.

In the meantime, we hope all the DR fantasy fans who haven’t yet started listening to Fear of a Black Dragon will migrate over there (it’s a really good show, ya’ll). And, as always, +1 Forward and The Gauntlet Podcast are there for more general PbtA gameplay talk.

Thanks!

  1. I would not have learned so much about the Gauntlet and Dungeon World if it had not been for this podcast, so thanks!

You all have kept me in a Dungeon World frame of mind as I go about my regular life doing things like mowing, washing dishes, and putting away laundry. It’s been a good time.

  3. I’m sad to see it go…. but I’m likely to listen to them all again anyway. Thanks for a great podcast! This podcast has really helped me to understand DW and pbta in general in a much deeper way.

  5. Like Lonnie Spangler, I have loved listening and learning with DR… but retiring the podcast now means I can happily go back to old episodes and re-listen (in my limited listening time). I’m sure there’s a lot from the earlier days that I didn’t appreciate and they will have aged like fine wine.

    Cheers, and on to FoaBD!

  7. DIscern Realities was how I heard about the Gauntlet community as well, and I listened to several episodes in a row when I found out about it! It is a great podcast but I guess it already asked all the questions in the move list and there’s not much more to be said 🙂

  9. thanks for all of the insightful and amazingly useful Dungeon world content, I learned a lot about hacking pbta and how to be a better DW GM listening to you guys.

  11. I’m sad to hear this, but completely understand and appreciate that, when it’s time to end something, then it’s time.

Thank you Jason and David for providing so many hours of entertainment and sharing your enthusiasm for Dungeon World.

  13. Having already listened twice to most of DR I can only add my “thank you” to the general chorus. You guys have been awesome.

What I liked the most were the arguments around custom moves, custom monsters, GMing techniques and other “extra” goodies that I hope will continue to find their place in some other podcast maybe? hint, hint

  15. Always appreciated your willingness to re-assess where you are with projects and move on when you have to. DR is what brought me here, but the new productions that have come since continue to amaze and provide amazing insights

  17. Great run, guys. And I have faith that when something DW-related or DW-adjacent comes up in the future, I will enjoy hearing about it on one of your other excellent shows.

  19. Sounds like an excellent plan. Having found the rest of the Gauntlet through DR, I’m glad the show existed.

Hopefully the sagas of the Castafiel family as well as Ramshackle Crow, Scabs, and Sister Evelyn the White all wrap up or are continued elsewhere…

  21. Ok…So I know where I can continue to hear great podcasts with Jason Cordova. What about David LaFreniere? Will you be making any new podcasts? This fan wants to know!

  23. I frequently appear as a player in episodes of Pocket Sized Play, but I currently do not have plans for an alternative spot as a regular host of a podcast. That said, keep an eye out for news about future Gauntlet developments! We have other projects in the works that I plan on being involved in!

  25. I’m going to miss DR…it’s how I found the Gauntlet also. You folks did a wonderful job with it, I’m glad to see it retire gracefully rather than just fade away. Au revoir!

  27. DR was my introduction to the Gauntlet and it’s been such an amazing resource as I’ve explored this hobby. Thank you for all your hard work on this podcast. I’m sad to see it go, but I’m glad you’re making a change if it feels like the right time for it.

  29. Congrats on the run!

“Can’t say I’ve ever been too fond of beginnings, myself. Messy little things. Give me a good ending anytime. You know where you are with an ending.”

  31. Sad to see DW go as it was (as many others) my gateway into the gauntlet. I can honestly say that Chimaeracast would not exist without what you 2 brought to the table. However, I do think this is a great move for you both! Instead of letting it get droll for you, you can leave it on a beautiful high watermark and it can become a sort of staple DW resource for people. The idea that I can still direct people to that catalogue makes me smile. Also, just a thought as I was bouncing off of others’ posts. Last episode ends with a bunch of fan made black gates? Like a collage of people describing the end of a character as a send off/up. Might be fun.

I’ll see you both on the other side! Cheers fellers!

  33. Ivan Vaghi We have thought about ways of keeping those stories going. We may just finish the stories separate from the discussion episodes and put them in the feed, or we may create scenarios and starters for folks to tell their own versions.

  35. Thanks so much for bringing us this podcast and sharing this update. It has helped me so much as a GM to really have all the insight and discussion around not just the “how” but also the “why” of the game.

As I continue to play DW into the future, even though it will be retired, I’ll point people to this podcast as one of the best resources available if you really want to go beyond just grokking this game.

  37. I just started listening this summer after recommendations from a friend. Even though’ve I’ve never really enjoyed Podcasts, I have really enjoyed the whole series, and are thinking about starting DW again. I’ve especially appreciated the thoughts and references to Old School-D&D; as that is something I haven’t really experienced.

I think the most valuable lesson is to really make those 6- hurt!

Am definitely going to check out some other The Gauntlet-stuff! Thanks for making the Podcast – and having a community for gaming sounds brilliant!
