So this is a little nuts.

So this is a little nuts.

So this is a little nuts. In case it doesn’t come through in the link, the one lone used copy of Dogs in the Vineyard on Amazon selling for $1,496.01.

I found a 6 month old Reddit thread (https://www.reddit.com/r/rpg/comments/7ebv98/get_dogs_in_the_vineyard_in_print/) where Vincent said he’s contemplating a new edition. Or not, and it will go forever into out of print land.

Anyway, wow.

  1. Sometimes stuff priced like that is listed by a bot (or IA… though not a very smart one…). The machine tries a very high price with the hope of “guessing” right for collectible items (and sometimes even for regular items), then lowers the price little by little. Although this behavior is more common on ebay than amazon.

(My solution was to buy the PDF and print it myself on Lulu; it’s decent enough)

  3. Yes? Jim Crocker . I mean they can’t take back stuff obviously (pdfs already downloaded and prints lready made/distributed).

Definitely able to. I took down a bunch of my game things, dtrpg means that the ppl who have it can still download it, but I chose to no longer have it for sale.

So, yeah, otherwise your telling someone that they have to keep it available in perpetuity, or has to relinquish the rights to their work.

Edit: or make rights available to purchase, or licensed at all times.

Maintaining stuff is work and if a creator doesn’t want to do that work, they don’t have to (in this specific scenario),. I think if the reason is they no longer want to put that content out, makes sense. If I drew stock art of uber sexualized people then no longer wanted to make said stock art available, I think I should be able to.

I think this type of thing can be weird if say, big corp bought a significant cultural item to purposely keeo it hidden.

Or the feelings come around from people who may feel left out? The internet has been around a while now, so like for me, I haven’t lived without an avenue to an item I wanted. I may not have the money, but the avenue is ever present in the form of ths internet. I wonder how that works and how much it relates to this, because I feel like the internet can make it a won’t take no for an answer, I can pirate things if it comes down to it.

  5. I mean, its doesn’t want it in the world at this time. As far as seen here without hearing from him or someone where else saying so, its doesn’t want to have it released any longer.

He wanted it for sale at some point, because it was and had a print run. A lot of this has assuming behind it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything saying why its not for sale any longer.

It could literally be just wanting to move past prior work. Again, taking down pdfs for sale doesn’t mean much except its no longer being distributed/supported.

If its a game you’ve enjoyed, I think you probably should keep it? Like, if I took down one of my games, I’d kinda feel weird if people destroyed their copy or something. Even if it was because I took it down for say moral reasons or something. I can’t blame people for purchasing a thing I made that has weird moral questions in it, and not seeing it before purchasing it or over time.

Like, other stand point to go in on, is if this game means something to you personally. If it doesn’t and the act of removing it from your library makes you feel something positive, go ahead yo! If its important and you feel like you should because of guilt or something, maybe maybe not?

For example, I have dvds of some childhood cartoons. I watched some cartoons that now today their leads have been accused of terrible stuff, and they most likely did said stuff. I can’t blame younger me for liking a cartoon because younger me did not know this day would come, younger me just wanted fun gross cartoons.

If younger you got the game and liked it for xyz reasons, you can’t expect younger you to have all the information you have of stuff going on in the world today, or of someone elses feelings on a game today.

That path leads to madness yo.

But these are just thoughts, and I think if it makes you feel better do it. If its from a place of guilt for owning a game that he’s removed from distro, I’d sit on it at least so you can examine those questions internally of why do you want to, applied in other circumstances would you do the same, for what item thing or etc would you not do this for.

It could be a good personal armchair examination. Even if the end result is the same, getting rid of your copy, learning, more about yourself is always a good thing in general 🙂
