Podcast recommendations? I’m open to not just gamer ones.

Not a fan of AP much.

Assume all Gauntlet and Musdirected Mark podcasts covered.

Like economic, science and lexicographic ones.

Lean liberal.

Appreciate non American pov, but still require English (I tried a french rpg podcast, couldn’t track. )

Finally, prefer shorter backlog.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Freakanomics Radio

    TED Radio Hour

    The Indicator from Planet Money

    Planet Money

(I wouldn’t worry about the backlog of any of these. Just move forward.)

  3. Regarding RPG ones: Backstory by Alex Roberts is great (interviews with RPG and LARP designers but not always about their designs, just a great interview show. I love how she does her research on the person and they’re generally surprised st some of the questions.)

Regarding non-RPG, I’m a fan of The Atheist Experience, and not necessarily if you are atheist. (They’re a weekly call-in show for theist to explain their positions and atheists to talk about issues they face. They also cover church and state issues. There’s a rotating set of hosts so you may find traction with some you don’t with others. Matt Dillehunty’s secular morality system based around well-being is fascinating. Tracy Harris is probably my favorite host. Mainly it’s a great way to think through and find a way to more comfortably explain something which many might either take for granted or don’t think too deeply about.)

  5. As mentioned before, Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History, Hardcore History Addendum, and Common Sense are all great.

The Cromcast is a really awesome literary podcast focusing on Robert E. Howard and other pulp authors and their influence.

If you like audiobooks and weird pulp fiction, check out the Friedrich Wilhelm Von Junzt Library of Forgotten Worlds podcast. It has excellent intro and outros that may take you a while to start getting all the jokes. Finn J.D. John does a great job of reading these stories.

  9. If you want to get off the beaten path, check out Desert Oracle Radio, a podcast about American deserts, or as Ken Lane puts it, THE American desert. I didn’t think I had any interest in American deserts until I listened to this at the urging of some friends. It covers weird history, ecology, the paranormal (Lane is fascinated but skeptical of the UFO phenomenon), and has these frequent weird call in skits (I think they’re skits?) from some sort of Libertarian bro describing a different disastrous get rich quick scam in each episode. It’s like nothing else I’ve heard.

  11. I’m a straight, white, cis dude. I have found podcasts a great way to access perspectives of people with different racial and gender identities from mine. In fact, I consider podcasts a way of educating myself on racial and gender issues without putting an emotional burden on PoC and women friends to always explain shit to me!

Below are some great shows, ranging from the nerdy to comic to serious social commentary:

    Why won’t you date me?

    Black girl nerds

    Still processing

    We live here

    Code switch

    Sooo many white guys!

    Our turn: women on gaming

    The stoop

    Black nerd power

2 dope queens (now a TV show)

    Unladylike

    Hope you enjoy!

  15. I’m a history nerd, so aside from the Hardcore History recommendations, i also recommend “When Diplomacy Fails”, specifically “The July Crisis Project” and “The Irish Rebellion”. There’s also Revolutions which has been pretty great.

  17. Is Hardcore History really 5-6 hours long per episode? Sadly, that’s outside my listening zone. I guess I’m short-attention span theatre – I like podcasts that are 10 – 30 minutes, and will make exceptions for really good RPG podcasts up to an hour or so

Thanks everyone for the suggestions so far, I’ve added a bunch of first episodes to my queue. Looking forward to listening…

  19. Here’s a few that haven’t been mentioned.

Stay Tuned with Preet – a podcast about justice and fairness by former US Attorney Preet Bharara.

Futility Closet – “…a collection of entertaining curiosities in history, literature, language, art, philosophy, and mathematics, designed to help you waste time as enjoyably as possible.”

Levar Burton Reads – it’s like Reading Rainbow for grownups

MDC: the Megadumbcast – “A daily podcast identifying the dumbest thing on every single goddamn page of Palladium’s Heroes Unlimited RPG.”

Pod Save America – “Four former aides to President Obama — Jon Favreau, Dan Pfeiffer, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor — are joined by journalists, politicians, comedians, and activists for a freewheeling conversation about politics, the press and the challenges posed by the Trump presidency.”

Two Hundred a Day – Two guys review select episodes of The Rockford Files. If you every watched Rockford, try it, its worth it.

Neo Scum – Its a Shadowrun Actual Play Podcast (I don’t really like AP podcasts, but this one is an exception. It’s good. )

Great Leap Years by Stephen Fry – “The podcast explores topics ranging from the rise of humankind as the inventor, to the astonishing combination of persistence, investment and inspiration it took to create the Gutenberg Press and the communication technologies that created our world. It tells the story of how our lives have been transformed by a fascinating and compelling mixture of human decision and vision, greed and need.”
