The newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon is here! In this one, Tom and I begin our exploration of the dusty corridors of Masks of Lankhmar. The Expert Delve portion contains a really deep dive into the concept of in medias res and how to use that technique to achieve a number of desirable outcomes at the game table.
Enjoy!

Great discussion about beginning in medias res. I would add “setting the tone” as a goal. Also giving player options might be a good way to indicate sandbox style play, so instead of starting with a fight, start with the moment before a fight could break out, so PCs could set an ambush, hide, try to deceive etc. “Wiggling out” is trying to avoid a decision, running away is a valid strategy.
