For the folks that do Gauntlet Hangout game play, or are planning on participating in Gauntlet Con, or whatever… one of these might be useful:
MicMute is a a little open source Windows app that will mute your internal or USB mic with a hot-key, regardless of what application you’re in. It can be set to toggle muted/unmuted, or in push-to-talk mode (hold down the key when you’re speaking). https://sourceforge.net/projects/micmute/
There’s a (not free, but cheap) Mac equivalent, Shush. http://mizage.com/shush/
This is very useful, thanks Paul!
I’m sharing it with our French-speaking hangouts gaming community.

If you use Discord for gaming (TTRPG or other) there is a built-in mute key. Very handy – when I run audio only games I ask that folks reverse the normal setting and set it to mute unless they push to talk.

Yochai Gal Does it work while you’re on another app?

Yes, for instance if I’m in Chrome in a separate monitor and want to say something, I can still press the key to unmute/mute myself. At least, it works that way for me in Linux – I assume the same for Windows as Discord is pretty much an equal player on that front.

Hmmm… I’ll have to try that next time I’m gaming on Discord. Thanks for the info sir!

That sounds very useful. Ctrl+D to mute / unmute in Hangout is good but too often I have the character keeper or rollforyourparty as active windows.

MicMute runs in the background and responds to the hotkey regardless of which window/app has focus.
