MicMute is a a little open source Windows app that will mute your internal or USB mic with a hot-key, regardless of what application you’re in. It can be set to toggle muted/unmuted, or in push-to-talk mode (hold down the key when you’re speaking). https://sourceforge.net/projects/micmute/

  1. If you use Discord for gaming (TTRPG or other) there is a built-in mute key. Very handy – when I run audio only games I ask that folks reverse the normal setting and set it to mute unless they push to talk.

  3. Yes, for instance if I’m in Chrome in a separate monitor and want to say something, I can still press the key to unmute/mute myself. At least, it works that way for me in Linux – I assume the same for Windows as Discord is pretty much an equal player on that front.
