Pining for Polyhedrons

My group has really embraced 2d6+STAT and the beauty of 7-9, despite having come up in the time of THAC0 and non-weapon proficiencies. We don’t pine for critical hits (or misses) now that we’ve switched over to Dungeon World. However, we do have big bags of dice that feel… underused.

Sometimes I miss rolling them, so please share with me how you have incorporated d20s into DW.

Edit: I guess I’m thinking about a custom move or an advance. Something that would let the players actually roll the d20s.

  1. I did make a 2d6 simulator on a blank d20 but that doesn’t help with the dice you already have. Just if you want the feel of rolling a d20 but with 2d6 results

  3. There is a German DW clone which lets you roll a d20 under your DW attribute. It counts as a 10+ if you roll ten or more under it. Adjusting that number you can easily decide for yourself how much of 7-9 results you like to see (more or less than 50%).

  5. You can easily adjust a d20 to give you the same spread. Something like 1d20+Stat.

    8-: miss

    9-16: partial

    17+: full

I actually do this on all skill checks when I run 5e (my players are playing 5e, but I’m running DW). The math isn’t exact, but it works fine.

  7. Will P something similar occurred to me. I like the two-dice feel of DW so I’m considering 2d20+stat:

    20- is a 6-

    21-29 is a 7-9

    30+ is a 10+

Using anydice.com, the statistics looks about right. I’d probably try to work in some complication for rolling natural 1s and 20s.

  9. I haven’t done the math but can’t really imagine that the distribution is significantly different between rolling -1 to +2 on a d20+ATT. d20+attribute seems to make much more sense to me.
