Here is a link to the newest episode of Fear of a Black Dragon! In this one, Tom McGrenery and I are exploring the gelid catacombs of the OSR classic, Death Frost Doom. It’s one of my very favorite adventures, and I can’t wait to share why I love it so much with you.

This episode was really fun to plan and record, and I think you’ll agree Tom and I are really hitting our stride with this new show. The Expert Delve portion is particularly fun because we get to hear Tom talk about his experience running Death Force Doom, a re-skin using Imperial stormtroopers and the Stay Frosty rule set.

Also: thanks to Paul Edson for the sharp edit!

Enjoy!

  1. Having played in Tom McGrenery’s Death Force Doom sessions, I can attest to the slowly building dread of the place. I don’t remember him mentioning this to my memory, but it was all set on Hoth, which worked really well with the setting of the thing.

Also, I was pretty convinced that Tom must’ve done a lot of work reskinning it since so much just sounded right, from the names of places to the types of characters. We were somewhat shocked when we found out that the names were straight out of the module since they just felt so very Star Wars-esque.

I loved Tom’s idea for how to incorporate players that have previously played the module. Gonna throw that in the back pocket.

    Great episode! Module: purchased.

  3. I was expecting to like Black Dragon, because it’s a Gauntlet show, but I wasn’t expecting it to sneakily become my favourite Gauntlet show. I love me some in depth nerdery.

  5. Great episode! Not only did it get me thinking about running Death Frost Doom, but it also inspired me with some completely unrelated ideas of my own so thanks for that!

  7. Great episode, guys. I have ran DFD a few times as a DCC funnel (and really enjoyed it) but I didn’t recall a lot of what you were discussing. I then realized I had ran the old version. Now I am reading the new version and I think I will rework it for another DCC funnel again. Thanks for the heads up, fellas!

  9. Couple of things I thought you were going to mention… Giant’s nose? How incredibly hard it is to open the door beyond the parasite? The fact you didn’t mention the latter makes me want to dig it out and check it again…

  11. Eadwin Tomlinson – one of the doors out of room 22 is stupidly hard to open, the other isn’t: and they both lead to the same place. A somewhat cruel joke, perhaps.

  13. Oh yeah, I wasn’t very interested in the giant, so don’t think I would’ve used it if that bit came up in our game. I presume Jason didn’t either since neither of us thought to mention it. It is one of the things we’re alluding to when we talk about the partly DIY authorial voice, I suppose.

  15. Eadwin Tomlinson The giant thing is optional, if you’ll recall. You’re given one of several different possible options for what’s in the hole (or you can just make up your own, or have it be nothing at all). We also didn’t mention the albino spider and the bottomless pit and a few other things. You can’t fit EVERYTHING in.
