The latest episode of +1 Forward is out!

The latest episode of +1 Forward is out! This episode is a discussion episode with Rach Shelkey. We talk about what aspects of the Apocalypse Engine can be transported into other games. It’s a lively chat and I’m so thankful to have Rach as my co-host.

Our sponsor for this month is Queen City Conquest!

  1. When I discovered the MC rules for apocalypse world and PBTA it was this incredible sense of relief.

I have always relied heavily on improvisation and seat of my pants play with group creative endeavours, and never felt mechanically supported by games both playing live or in play by post games.

The MC rules stripped out complexity that frustrated me, and focused on fictional events and narrative beats that supported my play. Not only did they explicitly authorise my decision making in deciding on what to do next, they help me brainstorm other possibilities.

I do so little traditional prep for PBTA games because of how they support me as the MC. all I need to do is let the fictional soup of the setting, situation, and characters percolate so that when it is time, I can almost instinctively barf forth with the worlds reaction to the PCs.

  3. Richard Rogers Aww! <3 I'm still so honoured that you invited me to join the show!

This discussion was so much fun! I can’t wait until we record the next one!

  5. This discussion was very cool – it’s great to track how bits of PbtA philosophy are working their way through the broader gaming sphere.

  7. My favorite thing about this discussion is that it piggybacks nicely with something I have really been emphasizing in my own games and discussions (both private and on other podcasts) which is that many of the tools we love from PbtA can enhance non-PbtA games, too. Honestly, I think an informed, critical purveyor of RPGs takes the good from all sorts of sources and applies it to their gaming. FoaBD (my new show) is all about that cross-pollination.

Yeah, this episode was really well-timed for me.

  9. God, “pixel bitching” is such a good term. When I was first a GM I know I fell foul to this. The Dr Who RPG was where my attempts at doing the reverse came in, where I would give them a bunch of tools, plan no solution and then whatever the coolest plan was would be the right one.
