An idea I had for familiars in Dungeon World –
Summon Familiar Ritual : This ritual will summon a familiar from somewhere else to be your loyal companion for year and a day.
Conditions : You need to draw upon the power of a magical place.
You need the brain or heart from one of the creatures’ prey & one of the creatures predators, it will take 12 hours & cost 50 gold coins. You can have one familiar at a time.
Typical familiars : Bat, Cat, Dog, Echidna, Lizard, Owl, Platypus, Rat, Snake, Toad, Wombat.
Unusual familiar : Imp, Small Elemental, Pixie.
* Note unusual familiars are harder, requiring more dangerous conjuring location or they require favours for their service.
I’m in for echidna!

When you perform a summoning ritual with the brains and heart of a creature’s predator and prey in a place of power, you summon that creature to be your familiar for a year and a day.

I think an easy way to make the unusual familiars harder to summon could be the difficulty in obtaining the parts from their prey and predators. What hunts Elementals? That sounds like an adventure!

Not a huge fan of animal dissection. and i think 50 gp is fairly cheap. minimum 300.
I think any ritual that binds something to you should call for a real sacrifice on your part. how much of your blood or how many fingers is this worth to you?
blood: binds the animal to your command
Eye: allows you to see through its eyes
bit of tongue: allows you to talk from its mouth
… that sort of thing.

Daniel Fowler Makes for a great NPC… that “wizard” up in the tower, protected by a small army of beasts and creatures. You finally get past all her defenses to her chamber and she’s just laying on a cot, with more than half her body missing, blind, defenseless.

This sounds awesome, but does it need a custom move? Ritual already covers all of this:
Ritual
When you draw on a place of power to create a magical effect, tell the GM what you’re trying to achieve. Ritual effects are always possible, but the GM will give you one to four of the following conditions:
(I only picked the ones that apply):
It’s going to take days/weeks/months. (Make it 12 hours)
First you must (have the proper ingredients: brain or heart from prey)
It will require a lot of money (50 GP)

I thought he was using the ritual move and we were discussing the conditions

That may be. I wasn’t reading the OP like that because he listed “draw upon the power of a magical place” in the conditions, which is part of the Ritual trigger.

just some guidelines to use the ritual trigger for familiars so you don’t have to start from scratch each time
