Is there a good Sorcerer or Sorcerer analogue playbook? A friend is converting his 5e campaign to DW and having a bit of difficulty.

I don’t know the sorcerer that well. Is that, like, magic that is natural to the character, rather than having to learn/memorize spells?

Jason Cordova That’s pretty much it, I believe. Our Sorcerer is an ice dragon themed character that does a lot of damage but isn’t durable.

Maybe the Mage by Jacob Randolph?

A very simple but flexible compendium class I wrote, “The Diabolist”, inspired by the Sorcerer: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16cnR5Tc3e_2WWaVYTHknF24bm7P5WCRvADQP637grw4/edit?usp=drivesdk

Jason Cordova that Mage class is really good. It has quite a few moves in common with the Wizard though, which the party also has.

What else can you tell us about the sorcerer’s style, other than their ability to cast without memorizing?

Daniel Fowler All I can remember is the above. Ice Dragon themed, does a lot of damage but isn’t durable. Immolator probably is the best bet but with some considerable reskinning as fire and ice are quite different.

I think part of the issue is that Dungeon World isn’t as interested in things like DPS and durability, it cares more about style and tropes. What makes this “ice dragon” cool and unique? I would suggest checking out Johnstone Metzger’s Class Warfare.

When we converted our Ptolus campaign to DW, we used the Class Warfare approach of mixing three “specialties” to convert the characters. I had to create a few extra, including the Spontaneous Caster and the Dragon Heir to handle our sorcerer. You can find them and the other changes we made at the link below. Some of the other stuff there gives a more “d20” feel to some things (such as wands, for example).rpg.divnull.com – Ptolus Dungeon World – DivNull RPG

A revision to the Mage is something that has been on the back of my mind for some time. There is room for a caster without a spell list. Would anyone be interested in my notes?

In 3.5 the sorcerer knew few spells but could cast more often than the magic user who had more flexability. In DW the wizard is a combo of both already.

Peter J your playbook is being used at this very moment (in a grimy Osaka pub). He’s quite excited to use it.

Nope! Make up your own spells, whatever you want within the realm of your chosen fields.
