In Dungeon World, if someone takes the extra D6 on a Hack and Slash, and deals enough damage to kill their enemy outright, do you still have the enemy make an attack?

It’s certainly an option: they chose to expose themselves to the enemy attack, and fantasy fiction is full of enemies lashing out with their last breath. Other times I’ll let them revel in their awesomeness and not attack them back, as is my right as a GM 😀

I would almost always deliver the enemy’s damage. From my experiences in fencing and martial arts, I know that striking each other at the same time is very common. One combatant might make it count more but that doesn’t mean there was no reply.

Yes.
Yes.
yes, this is the player equivalent of “Bring it On!” and I love when it happens.

It is easy enough to imagine a dying blow or the enemy taking advantage of your opening before realizing it was a trap. its also possible the damage comes from another source.

There’s no initiative in DW, so killing the enemy outright doesn’t mean that you got to hit first. And even if you did (fictionally) that doesn’t mean that the enemy can’t still hit you during his “last breath”. So yes, have the enemy deal damage.

Whether its that the enemy hits you, it explodes liquid hot magma blood, there’s an earthquakle, or you fall down … yes, the PC should take damage. They’ve opted to, and you shouldn’t take that away from them.

Just because they do enough extra damage to kill their opponent doesn’t mean it all comes in one strike. It also doesn’t mean that the PC managed to strike first. In fact, since they chose to take a risk that means that they probably took the hit from the enemy in order to make the killing strike they made.

Important to note that the move isn’t ‘the enemy damages you’, but ‘the enemy attacks you’. Things that could be attacks:
– They curse you with their last breath.
– They collapse on you, knocking you to the floor.
– They infect you with the plague they were carrying.
– Your weapon is stuck in their corpse.
– Their dying scream attracts attention.

Maybe not an attack, but definitely a soft move.

Thanks Logan Howard 😀
It’s mostly just going off the Dungeon World SRD – quoting it, “The enemy’s counterattack can be any GM move made directly with that creature. A goblin might just attack you back, or they might jam a poisoned needle into your veins. Life’s tough, isn’t it?”
