Hey friends!
I’m thinking of doing a once a month “Playtest Spotlight” on my blog.
That would change the layout a little to be:
2 articles
1 Game review
1 Playtest review
Thoughts?

That sounds good, you play a lot of games so I think that’d fit nicely in there.

I want to find a way to also talk about and high light up coming games but I don’t feel you can really do a review on a product that isn’t a product yet. It’s why I never wrote about Masks.

Yeeeah but I feel like as long as you play the game, you can review it in so far as what you think of it so far. That’d be valuable for people looking at up coming games, esp KS projects and what not. Reading the non-finished text and then reviewing it, no. But reviewing something using the provided materials is perfectly fine, to me.

I feel like an unfinished game isn’t fair to crap on. I feel like that’s a discussion piece. It’s not a review because it’s not done. You can’t write a review of an unfinished movie because you haven’t seen the whole thing.

Sure, do that then. It’s still valuable for people looking for thoughts and opinions on an ongoing project. And saying I liked this and didn’t dig this so much about X, if you’ve played it, still seems reasonable to me. It doesn’t have to reflect the final product but it can be a review of a play experience using the materials, whatever you want to call it. Seems like something I’d like to read whatever you choose.

As a consumer of games, that sounds great. As a designer of games, it sounds terrifying.

I would just treat it as playtest feedback if it’s an unfinished game I’ve released materials for? Id change the finished version accordingly and be stoked a beta playtest is happening without my supervision and adjust the design accordingly. If it’s not ready for that I don’t release materials publicly right?

I kind of think ‘crapping on’ an unfinished game isn’t a bad thing, as long as it is more than “I didn’t like it”. If you point out what didn’t work for you and why it gives the designer feedback they can use to improve their game if they so choose. I’m sometimes afraid that our community is so supportive that games are made that could have been better if only there had been someone saying what didn’t work.

I’ve always been very careful when I talk about playtests, at least in public, to the point where I almost never do. The exceptions are when I have such a good time with the playtest, I think my excitement about the game will outweigh any negative things I might have to say (such as with The Watch, or Brandon Leon-Gambetta’s Pasion de Pasiones).

Jason Cordova Man, this was SUCH a nice comment to see! Thank you, Jason! (Legitimately mind-blowing to have awesome an awesome podcasters I admire and listen to fanatically say nice things about my little game!)
I’m also pro-game chats like that with the caveat of unfinished game made clear! Perhaps if there’s a game you aren’t sure if you can talk about without crapping on the game, you skip that column for that month? Would possibly make it harder for the consistency on it. I’ve been loving the blog since I was turned to it by the way! I’m planning on binge-reading this week!
