Episode 36 of Discern Realities is here! For our final episode of the year, we decided to do something a little different and have Slade Stolar on to discuss The Indie Hack, his thoughts on Dungeon World, and more!
David LaFreniere and I are really grateful to those of you who have been following the show for the last year. It has been a huge amount of work to produce DR, but the one thing that makes it worth doing is knowing you guys are enjoying it and using it to make your games better. We’ve made a huge number of friends in the last year and been involved in some really cool conversations, and none of it would be worth doing without that.
Cc: Michael G. Barford and Will P. (who I can’t tag for some reason).
Enjoy!
I know we aren’t supposed to play favorites with the gauntlet podcast children, but Discern Realities is probably my consistent favorite. Great thoughts, questions, humor, and characters. Could also be that I miss gaming with the two of you 🙂 <3

Just listening now but wanted to drop a thought before it flies away: another reason , maybe the most important reason why indie games use six-sided dice, is that they’re the only dice that’s available everywhere. In a lot of countries the only dice available to purchase at all is the six-sider, and in general an indie principle is to make your game as accessible as possible.

For some reason I am now compelled to look up “how do you say ‘what is a d6′”in as many languages as possible

That was great! I’m enjoying the comic strip AP one as well. Hopefully people are flocking to that as well, does it seem like people are downloading it a lot?
I like at the end when Slade is just like “one last thing, I really like dungeon world” lol

Fraser Simons The Domenico AP? I haven’t specifically promoted it to the Tavern or anything yet. Probably will once we have three or four released.

Ah so it’s not as popular yet. Yet!

Fraser Simons It will all get where it needs to be in time. I anticipate people will be discovering the Comic Strip APs we’re doing right now years from now. I play a long game, haha.

Slade Stolar was great on the podcast, I can’t wait to try the game out now, most likely buy the softcover now!

Fraser Simons David cut out a few bits, of course. One included me shouting “Happy Birthday!” as a kindof non-sequitur.
jim miller Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. I hope to be a resource to Gauntleteers in various ways, including answering any questions about TIH (and running it at some point in future).
Also, the PDF is in this year’s Epimas bundle of Mirth.

Slade Stolar I actually found your random “Happy Birthday!” charming in an awkward way, haha.

“Charming in an Awkward Way” is the name of my unpublished memoir.

I also screamed “Everyone is my friend!” randomly, which got cut.

Slade Stolar, I am so excited to try this out. When I restarted RPing again, I came back to Pathfinder followed by AW. So, when I found Dungeon World, I found too much Pathfinder/DnD in the AW and as Slade Stolar mentioned …. World of Dungeon was too little text.

Trying to hit a sweet spot for me and my players with TIH in just the way you describe. Hope you dig it. Let me know if you have questions.

I positively adore WoD, but Slade’s point on the show is valid: it depends a lot on the skill of the GM.

WoD = World of Darkness, my fine friend! I was confused as hell until I scrolled upwards.

I have to do a double take every time WoD is mentioned on here… Great idea to get Slade Stolar on the show to discuss indie hack and has probably prompted me to try it now. I think the main selling point is the continued support planned for it as well as this master idea, intriguing!

Tommy Rayburn This might be better handled in a private thread. You can make a post just to Slade 🙂

Man harsh critics of my editorial style! (he says with a smile) I keep those “charming in an awkward way” moments just for us…

Eadwin Tomlinson I agree. I was not sold to TIH before I listened to the show but now I will look into it. On a side note the holiday special intro music was AMAZING. 👏👍

Tommy Rayburn and I are having a really interesting side convo about how minimal is too minimal.

Slade Stolar Tommy Rayburn finding that sweat spot must not be easy. In the end, everyone as his own preference I guess.

Indeed. I have a huge blind spot, because I’ve only gamed with maybe 100 people. That means I’ve got assumptions based on less than 0.001% of the hobby.

We edited out the bit where we talked about how The Clay that Woke needs more published material for it, Paul Czege.

I can tell where that would have fallen in the conversation. I wonder if I’ll ever design a game that lends itself to supplement publishing.

You just need to design fans that are content with a single vision. Not needy jerks like me.

I loved this episode’s interview. Good to focus attention on what we like about our games, what we don’t like, and how to change it.
