Folks, I’m pleased as punch to announce the latest +1 Forward is out! This one has Monsterhearts 2 by Avery Alder.
There are some great nuggets of info on MH 2 in here, well worth the listen for the fans and the curious.
You can still back MH2 on Kickstarter, but do NOT delay, it’s almost over! Help us reach the Kieron Gillen stretch goal!

Gaming worlds colliding all over the place today. I’ve just been watching Danielle Riendeu (of Idle Thumbs and Idle Weekend) playing Dungeon World with Adam Koebel, Austin Walker, et al, and now I find out on the Gauntlet that Kieron Gillen (of RPS, I assume) is doing a thing for Monsterhearts? Crazy (in the best possible way).

(Actually I feel like I already saw it, but I’d forgotten so you get the credit.)

Great podcast Richard Rogers – if I had any games to hawk I’d sponsor you myself!

Enjoyed the pod. I really want to like Monsterhearts, but the idea of playing at being back in high school just fills me with so much visceral discomfort that I don’t know that I could ever play it.

I hear you, Saul Alexander. I despised high school so much I skipped my senior year (to attend a local college early). I enjoy Monsterhearts because it gives me a safe space to explore those feelings of isolation and longing and confusion. I played a Hollow for two years over play-by-post and some of the scenes with Holly are scorched in my mind. It was, for me, a very immersive experience.

Saul Alexander It’s for that very reason, you have to play! 🙂

Saul Alexander So play a character different than high school Saul! If I played High School “Me” it would be the most boring game of MH ever:
Steady girlfriend, never drank, did drugs, or got into trouble, and played enough Super Smash Bros Melee to last four lifetimes.

Whereas I did actually make a pact with an infernal entity in freshman year.

Saul Alexander I had a player in my regular weekly group express similar reservations. Enough so that I agreed to keep our campaign short and figure a way out for his character if he just wasn’t enjoying himself and decided at any point to sit out the remainder of our short campaign.
About four sessions in, he said he was really enjoying the play and it was the best RP he’d had in years. Now we’ve extended our run, with his blessing, to ten sessions so far and still having a blast.

I hear you guys, and I’m not so set in my ways that I’d say “never”. If I had a group I was really comfortable with who were really into the idea I’d give it a shot, for sure. But I usually GM, and I don’t see myself fighting through the ickiness I feel about it enough to actually bring it to the table myself.
Also pretty sure my current group wouldn’t get excited about it, either. Up until now we’ve mostly played just played D&D (punctuated by a short Burning Wheel adventure), and have just started Dungeon World. We’re intending to branch out and try a few more things in 2017, but I can think of at least a dozen games I’m more comfortable and/or interested in bringing to the table than Monsterhearts.
To be clear: I think it’s a great concept, and I’m glad so may people get so much out of it. I just think it’s probably not for me (at least not in the foreseeable future).

This was my favourite ap segment so far. The “directors commentary” was super helpful as I don’t think MH2 is the easiest game to grock in terms of “what do we actually do?”

Oli Jeffery I liked that too. I’d go so far as to say that that would be a valuable addition to the format, (either on this podcast, or on a theoretical podcast about “how to GM good”).

I backed it anyway, because I’d like to read it. looks like it may just hit the $95,000 level. Good effort.
