I’m working on a thing for next year related to the Satanic panic of the 80’s & early 90’s. I need to be put in touch with the following kinds of people:
-People who grew up during that time, and have stories to share related to Satanic panic and RPGs.
-People who are familiar with or interested in movies and other forms of media that promoted the ideas behind the Satanic panic.
-People who are familiar with or interested in how AD&D 2E was changed from 1E because of the Satanic panic.
-People who are familiar with or interested in how the Satanic panic (and other moral panics) intersected with fear of certain minorities, such as gay men.
-People who are interested in the scars the modern hobby has from the Satanic panic days.
-People who are knowledgeable about or interested in new moral panics, or modern-day parallels with the Satanic panic, and how those things affect the hobby.
If you know anyone who might fit into one of the above categories (or if you yourself fit one of them), please let me know. You can email me at gauntletpodcast@gmail.com.
Feel free to re-share this post.
Thanks!

My mom destroyed my AD&D books. Then guilted me into destroying a second set. I went through three sets before I left for college. Just sayin’. Bible belt America. Jack Chick tracks. The whole thing. I still have PTSD. (Totally using that inappropriately. My apologies to people who really have PTSD.)

Ray Otus I did as well. I still have a hard time with geek shame caused by this time in my life.

I grew up through it, but I think because of my parent’s divorce and the way her church friends ostracized her (divorce was just not done then), I think she decided that they people in church weren’t necessarily the best people to judge such things.
Anyway, I’m definitely interested in your project and would be happy to participate, not that I had any traumatic moments. Still suffer from geek shame, but I don’t think it’s related to the Satanic Panic.

Clinton N. Dreisbach has some really good stuff to contribute if he’s interested.

Unfortunately, his http://theescapist.com/ is under reconstruction, but it used to be THE historical archive of all the satanic panic nonsense. I’m sure he can restore the archived data if you ask.

When I went to live with my dad in 1984 my RPG books were not welcome. “No Satan in this house!”. Not to mention religious leaders I respected at the time saying crazy crazy stuff.

There is a lot of good scholarship on “moral panics” like this: Dangerous Games: What the Moral Panic over Role-Playing Games Says about Play, Religion, and Imagined Worlds

The Tabletop Superhighway just came out with an episode on the panic. Haven’t had a chance to listen yet but thought you might be interested: http://traffic.libsyn.com/thetabletopsuperhighway/Episode_057.mp3?dest-id=221008
