Ran my first Dungeon World game tonight for a group of seven players,
Vulwin the Ranger, Kelial The Immolator, Dave the Dwarven Cleric, Trixie the halfling thief, Sanguinus the human Paladin, Xia the elf Barbarian and Lexor the Elf Druid.
A rag tag Elf heavy band of adventurers entered the Goblin Hole, fought and role-played their way out of several sticky situations and rescued some villager children from the clutches of the evil goblins.
System was easy to learn and even easier to teach. we all had a blast.
though I have to say I still have a lot to learn about DMing DW.
Wow, seven is a lot of players for a first go at something. I generally limit my group to five (even for games I know well). As I’m about to run DW for the first time, I’d be interested for you to elaborate on what you think went right and wrong.

It was a lot. I invited a larger group thinking most would be unable to attend but everyone I invited showed up.
What worked best for me was using questions to allow the players to drive the fiction forward. None of us were super up on the rules and I made some mistakes with say not knowing how to deal with the Rangers animal companion or the immolators burning brand move, but the drama didn’t suffer for it.
Long story short. Use lots of questions to get the pc flowing the ideas.. and use swarm tactics for large groups of weaker monsters.

Seven??!? Four, maybe five at most is the wheelhouse for DW. You gotta have enough spotlight for each of the players. I suggest you consider breaking your 7 into two groups of 3 and 4.

yes I am already considering splitting the group. but so far it ran well. there was only one place where I felt I left a character out. I absolutely could not have run that group in another system, I would have had to scale up my encounters dramatically, I was only expecting 4 or 5 to show, but given the ability of DW to scale the fiction of the monster attacks let me create a challenge and threat even with my puny little groups of five to eight goblins. we will see how session two goes in two weeks.
thanks for the advice and kind words.

I run a game for six on a weekly basis. It’s kind of like a TV series. You have episodes that focus on some of them one week, then switch that focus the next. If you are good at keeping the balance, then I wish you the best with how many players you have. Sounds like a great group. Got a lot of variety in what they can do. My group tends to be heavy on the melee side because we only have a few who like playing casters or anything too far from fighter lol

Thanks, I love the Episodic TV concept, I am already planning session 2, to pick up where they left off, I am seriously considering splitting the group into two, but give my limited time I am going to try to keep it going as is, will see if everyone makes it in two weeks.
🙂
