I really like the orc one-eye/gimp encounter that Jason Cordova uses to introduce new players to the fiction-first brutality of Dungeon World combat (see Discern Realities 8 & 24). I want to do something similar when I run my first game in a few weeks time, but maybe not that exact scene. Does anyone have any examples of other comparably powerful crucibles that they’ve thrown players into at the very start of a new campaign?

I ask my players leading questions on a dungeon they just looted, and what they have packed on certain pack animals. I then I have one of the pack animals devoured by a giant creature(usually a giant sandworm). Then it is up to the players to try and save the rest of the animals, and not get a limb eaten in the process.

I like to start the party split up in one’s and twos. That way they get more focus in their mini scene and form relationships with other PCs

A horde of kobolds. Sure they’re easy when you take down the two guards at the front. Not so much so when you start falling into the punji traps and have 10 of them descent upon the paladin. (see the swarm rules)

I had a demon of excess swallow players into its pocket dimension stomach full of hungry larvae instead of doing damage. That was an eye opener! The last three players had to exorcise the demon from his anchor, a young slave boy the demon kept close to him. Everyone was vomited up before the demon exploded in a gorey mess. Such a great encounter!
