Hey all!
For those of you who have played Ten Candles, how do you keep enough light to roll dice by without breaking the mood? I am planning to run it on my birthday (October 31st, how lucky is that?) and was doing a dry run and found things get too dark to read dice at around 3 candles. Any ideas?
Mirrors? Low wattage red light bulb in a lamp?

Hrmm. I did just buy a headlamp with a red light on it to maintain night vision. I will have to try it out!

I have some glow in the dark d6s that might work well. They charge up fairly quick when you stick a phone flashlight up against them.

Jealous! I still have to play that game. Also, Cc: Stephen Dewey, who will like to hear about your plans, I’m sure.

Yay! The darkness caused by fewer candles does encourage people getting really close and huddling in around the table to be able to see their cards, or the dice. That’s a bit intentional. I have never had much in the way of difficulty here, but depending on your setup a few things might cause less light (if you’re using high-wall candle holders, for example). If you don’t have a small enough table to make huddling around the candles easy, a small flashlight (ideally a red one, like the headlamp) works great. Though, all said, when you’re down to three candles there likely won’t be much reading left to do, and there’s not too much to have to remember at that point. (I hope!)

I was going to possibly try one full sized candle in the middle. Have that be the last candle and have it give just a little more light to everything. I think the head lamp will work well, though!

I have heard of the one-tall-candle trick and I fully endorse it.

Also, wait a second. Jason Cordova. How have you STILL not played?! Will you be at METATOPIA? Can I run a game for you please?

Stephen Dewey I’ll be there! And yes, I’d love to!

Alright Jason Cordova, you’re in. I need to finish compiling a list of awesome people for an after-hours game one of the nights. I have a barren hotel room, so we already have some playspace. This is definitely happening.

Stephen Dewey Sweeeet! I can tag some folks I know will be there if you want, see if they’re interested.

I haven’t played it, but how about a lamp with a blue light bulb to contrast the warm candle light?
