Anyone else play games by jim pinto?

Anyone else play games by jim pinto? While he worked for a long time at Alderac and other publishers, recently his stuff has been really interesting and imo solid indy games. His Protocol GM-less games are really cool.

Here’s a new KS for a new suite of GM-less games he’s working on. Or rather I should say – worked on. Check out the Risks section of the KS.

“These games are done and ready to print. As soon as the project ends, I tell the printer to make your books and send them off. PDFs go out instantly.”

(jim’s a personal friend, but he’s also a good and under-sung designer. He doesn’t do self-promotion well; but he does create good games)

  1. Yes!! I shared this elsewhere but I’ve played with him a bit at Strategicon and Go Play NW. Ok. A bit is a little bit of an understatement, only in that he steals me for days at a time when we meet at a con.

I highly recommend his games. The GMzero line has some treasures (Forget-Me-Not and Georges Children as examples). Took a tries to get into Protocol but I’ve had some brilliant game fun with that one. I got to play test Black Monk (one of the proposed Kickstarter goals) which is the same system as this one. It was delicious.

Here’s an example of my blog about a day with Jim at GoPlayNW a few months back. Mentions more than a few of his games if you’re interested: http://www.supernovembergames.com/tomes-of-tomes/2016/7/13/go-play-nw-2016-saturday

  3. Tomer Gurantz Yup, that sounds like jim. Even the photo-voidance.

I won’t be at Strategicon this September unless something crazy aligns, but maybe at a future Strategicon we can sync up and play some indy RPGs…

  5. Hey Jim Pinto fans, maybe one of you can help me because JP’s kickstarters frighten and confuse me. This is a whole series of games that run on the same engine, right? Are they different enough from each other to justify the price tag or am I paying full game prices for what essentially amounts to the playsets/reskins that are typically thrown in as free stretch goals in your average kickstarter? If they are legitimately different enough to justify the cost are they fully playtested (because he seems to make a lot of games really quickly)?

  7. Well this one looks like it’s for like 5 different games in the same series, right? I think it was the protocols kickstarter that I didn’t back for similar reasons, though.

  9. From my experience, Jim is pretty serious about his game testing. He’s been part of story games in seattle so from my experience has a broad base to test with, and has participated in many cons. When I see him at cons, he’s working hard. He’s always moving about and running his games in pretty much every slot all weekend long. And they’re some of the most memorable games I’ve played in. I can’t speak to your preferences, but I’m happy to sink money into this project.

As far as whether these are separate enough, I’d say the game system is generic enough to accomodate many games, but the personality is in the construction of the theme specific skins.

Have you played any of his games? Protocol or otherwise? Praxis is different, but the feel is somewhat similar, in that if you like how Protocol or his other GM-less games roll, you’ll like this. Perhaps we should get a game going online at some point?
