I have a project I’m working on and I’d like to poll you guys for opinions. Imagine if you will a collection of system and genre neutral plot hooks. What would you expect from the plot hooks presented therein? Are they whole plots with named NPCs and a beginning, middle and end with a twist? Or are they just suggestions? Kernels of ideas to inspire you in writing your own plot? When you think of a plot hook what do you see? What about adventure seeds, are they the same or different from plot hooks? What would you want out of a product like this? Thanks in advance for your input guys and gals. I really appreciate it.

I want questions attached to each that I can ask characters that will add another level or give them a twist. For instance, the hook is a captured caravan. The questions might be like “who is looking for you and what will they do if they find you.” Or “the caravan master was acting weird on the way out, what kind of illegal goods might he be carrying?”

I’ll get back to you with a real answer. All I know atm is that I want this product. My idea pool is so finite especially now that I’m working more and consuming media less. 😅

Ray Otus So, questions like those from Marshall Miller’s dungeon starters? That make connections between the players and the NPCs, or tie the PCs to a plot element?

Daniel Lugo I’ll definitely let the group know when it’s available! 🙂

I’m having trouble conceiving of genre-neutral plot hooks. Could you give us a couple of examples?

Ari Black A genre neutral plot hook would say something like, “you’re traveling and you come across a wrecked vehicle with people picking over its cargo”. It doesn’t specify whether you’re traveling by space ship, by car, or on foot. It doesn’t tell you who the scavengers are, normal people, bandits, zombies. It’s just a basic situation with generic, insert your own flavor set pieces. Each hook will probably have a series of questions to tie the PCs into it, like, “Which of you knows the person driving the wrecked vehicle?” or “What was the vehicle hauling? Is it something you want enough to fight off the scavengers?”

Ah yeah, then what Ray Otus said 🙂

Edward Hickcox Codex will be very similar to this. While not explicitly system neutral, many of the ideas can be used in lots of different games and systems.

Jason Cordova I’m looking forward to seeing more of Codex as you guys get it going.

My question still stands, though: what makes a usable plot hook for you? How are adventure seeds different?

I agree with Ray Otus

It depends how neutral you want to be. Once you start naming NPCs genre becomes more limited. I feel that names bring a definite flavor with them. This sounds like something I would like.
