Now, I won’t say He-Man is great art. Frankly, looking back you can see it did more harm to our culture than good. However, I would also argue that we were injected with the DNA of sword & sorcery at an early age, now shrouded by the mists of time, and are harkening back not to the He-Man that was (which, when viewed through adult eyes, is frankly awful), but rather the He-Man that ought to be…I’m talking about intergalactic vampire warlords invading your sword & sorcery world and installing Satanic Lich-Kings in a bid for colonial rule. Pterodactyl riders with laser guns in a dogfight with UFOs piloted by serpent men. Cleaving through hordes of cyborg beast-men as we leap from asteroid to asteroid towards that leering organic castle in space.
This blog post is a few years old, but it speaks to me in a huge way. This is why I love the OSR Carcosa setting; it’s the “He-Man that ought to be.”
I thought it was funny too that She-Ra was a dystopic setting- she led a rebellion against the dude that was Skeletor’s boss.

Warren Denning Skeletor’s boss would be the aforementioned “intergalactic vampire warlord,” Hordak.

I think of H-Man as Heavy Metal for kids myself.

Jason Cordova I just honestly wanted to hear you “say” “intergalactic vampire warlord.
I know its a knock-off, but I also have the same feels for Thundarr the Barbarian.

What is Thundarr a knock off of? It came out before He-man…Conan?

Oh did it? I didn’t know. I mean I’m sure its all a Conan knock-off but I didn’t take a look at the dates. Thundarr too was post-apocalyptic I believe.

Also…I love Thundarr. Oh…and the Herculoids!

Thundar has a little Kull the conqueror set in a post apocalypse. Since Kull is Conan’s predecessor it’s not much different but Kull is a little more fanciful than the early Conan stories. Still, it’s all the same arch typical character.

Seems like a good place to recommend Tom Scioli’s “American Barbarian” comic. Totally gonzo He-Man-ish science fantasy weirdness.

Warren Denning I love Thundarr! It had the craziest creatures. Plus Ookla was hilarious! I can totally see someone playing him as a character and having a blast. Here is my custom move for him.
When you get thrown from your horse (or horse-like creature), roll.
* 10+ Go into a rage and get +1 forward to your next Hack and Slash
* 7-9 Go into a rage and choose 2
-Successfully recapture your horse-beast
-Avoid drawing curious monsters to your temper tantrum
-Get +1 forward to your next Hack and Slash
