I’m trying to convince my partner to watch more geek-related movies (Star Wars, LotR, etc.). A direct quote from him as he scrolls through the Harry Potter films:
“Are they, like, fantasy crimefighters or something? Is it like Scooby-Doo, but for dragons and shit? And what’s their land called again? Hobble-Gobble?”
I would totally watch a remake of Harry Potter as a show about masked crimefighting wizards.
EDIT: Alternately, World Wide Wrestling to run a Hogwarts promotion?

Ok, I am currently being informed that I have misquoted him. The correct quote, after ‘dragons & shit,’ was:
“Why does it take eight movies to tell this story? Do they spend half an hour picking out curtains for Hobble-Gobble?”

I think you’re up the creek, my friend.

Wife just watched Star Wars for the first time this weekend and liked it a lot. I don’t think the Princess Bride is any less silly than Harry Potter- in both cases the books are better.
Star Wars itself is a post-modern mash-up of a lot of film genres. Here is a pretty good write up in Slate about it: http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/cover_story/2015/12/star_wars_is_a_pastiche_how_george_lucas_combined_flash_gordon_westerns.html

Mark Siwel The one I have managed so far is Doctor Who. He’s very fond of that one.
EDIT: Also, like me, he does not read for pleasure. Academia and law school destroyed that for us.

Or you know you could go balls-out-weird and shoot straight for Legend or Labyrinth

When you think about it, Tolkien’s original vision for the Lord of the Rings had a very Scooby-Doo feel to it. The main characters get caught up in supernatural events only to learn at the end that the true menace was an old man’s pipeweed smuggling gang.
