We had a fabulous first session of Bleakwood House tonight.
A funny thing happened: it was near the end of the session, after a hard journey to Bleakwood Isle, when the party encountered a fisherman and his family, apparently the only people who lived nearby. The fisherman was very friendly, and invited the party to join his family for a meal of roasted fish. He asked the bard to sing a song, he had lots of questions about why they had come to Bleakwood Isle, and it was just a generally peaceful time. At first, some of the players did not know how to handle this encounter. They couldn’t believe someone was just being friendly, and they kept looking for signs of possession or other dark motives; nervously wondering if it was all a trap. But it was not a trap. It was just a nice end to the session.
I hope they enjoyed it, because Bleakwood Manor is straight-up fucked.
Thanks all around: Jeff Burke Russell Benner Daniel Fowler Kyle McCauley
“Meet a nice person” is great GM move. It’s like the change up pitch that buckles the batter’s knees.

Players: Is he surly?
GM: nope
P: Does he seem like he’s hiding something?
GM: nope
P: … !?
I’ve thrown this one a few times. The players never see it coming.

I’m more worried for his health. this party just fed a friendly (but awkward) NPC to an obvious trap. we even brought a clockwork henchman and a disposable zombie (OK that one was my fault) but still sent him blindly to his death. no one even shot an arrow… now this nice guy is showing us to a haunted mansion. I would be surprised if he survives the first encounter. “i don’t like the look of that staircase… hey didn’t Phil have a wife and some children? lets round them up…”
