This is really great! I have to ask, Jason Morningstar, what is it about Apocalypse World that didn’t quite hit, in your opinion, that was improved upon in Monsterhearts?
I’m guessing it was the string economy vs. HX, am I right?
Anything else?
I think this is a fascinating topic, please don’t take my questions in any way as defensive or a set-up for an argument. Feel free to answer me off-line, too, if the new G+ even allows that? đ

Strings and harm both feel like improvements.

Harm in what way? The removal of the Harm Move and reduction of the number of harm ticks, or something else?

Monsterhearts handles harm in a more cogent way than Apocalypse World. The “this is the only move that works backwards” harm move never felt right to me.

Gotcha. Thanks for the answers, Jason.

brilliant minds, Jason Cordova. đ
(I can’t argue the points, plus, he gets a bonus for using cogent )

I find it interesting that we are dispensing with the sacred cow of “I bought this game, I cannot let it get destroyed!”
There’s always been the joke that a character sheet wasn’t broken in until it had a drink stain, or it got wet, at least at my table. I find the idea of destroying/altering parts of the game damn interesting, and something I think is easier to do with a cheaper game.
An interesting set of parallel ideas: while we’re seeing more of the “artifact creation” idea pop up, we also have Pandemic Legacy that encourages you to create a limited use board that will more than likely be destroyed once it’s been fully used.

Great show as usual. Daniel Lewis is still winning at Giving Me Life  đ (Yeah, I’m keeping score now.)

Ferrell Riley I think Pandemic Legacy actually straddles the line between destruction and artifact creation in an interesting way.  I suspect that at the end of the season, your map/characters will actually tell the story of your game in the same way that the map does at the end of The Quiet Year, for example.  It’s just that instead of starting with a blank piece of paper, you’re starting with a $60 game board.

Great episode! Since you mentioned LARP and Jason’s LARP game The Climb, you may be interested in this article by Alexa Clay on the potential of LARPs for promoting social change. I actually played The Climb with Alexa Clay and was interviewed for the article. https://aeon.co/essays/can-live-action-role-play-games-bring-about-social-change

I loved this episode. I can’t wait to try the Ghost Court game and to have the physical versions of the Fiasco Playbooks to add to my Fiasco kit. I also shouldn’t listen to you guys as I’ve now picked up Society of Dreamers and Metal Showcase 11pm. My self control is terrible.

Charlie Etheridge-Nunn Society of Dreamers is so solid. Try playing it by candlelight; it’ll change your RPG life forever!Â

Non gaming thing giving me life right now: a DIY project. Some people see a walking stick. I see a mage staff. Hmm? Maybe this is actually gaming related. https://www.pinterest.com/pin/380061656032208058/
Also looking forward to games which leave artifacts. Really into games which build content for other games (Microscope, Sword and Backpack System, Spellbook). Using an RPG to create content for Larp for example. Can’t wait to hear what you guys are going to talk about.
