We had a solid first session of Dungeon World for Saturday Morning Cartoons, our first event over on Gauntlet Hangouts. Thanks to David LaFreniere Richard Rogers steven watkins and Yoshi Creelman for joining me.

It was great fun, I love the cast characters. Everyone is so vivid and distinctive.

Yoshi Creelman I’m glad it was successful, since Hangouts will probably be my main method of gaming once I move from Houston.

I’ve only recently stepped into the world of Hangouts/online games, and so far I am loving it. Looking forward to the rest of the sessions in this campaign, and possibly more afterwards.

PbtA games are very well suited to hangouts

I’d like to see how you run Dungeon World Jason Cordova – perhaps you could do an afternoon session sometime to allow me to join in the evening? Alternatively you could record and share the session?

Eadwin Tomlinson I ask lots of questions, mostly, and then I incorporate the answers into the adventure. Today’s session was almost entirely improvised, since I had very little time to prep this week, but I normally do about an hour of prep per session. A quick Adventure Front, a simple map, and an opening set piece are helpful. I also prepare a handful of treasures, monsters and traps to sprinkle in. Other than that, it’s question time. I like to give the characters a chance to breathe in the first session; let them show us a little bit about what makes them tick. The questions are helpful for that, too.
Richard Rogers noted I didn’t give the characters a chance to interact with each other much, but that was mostly by design. I was more interested in seeing these characters in action and exploring their thoughts. I think the interpersonal stuff will come alive naturally as we learn more about them.

As for character interaction, Jason Cordova, I was noodling about that. I wonder how much was DM direction vs. “new group + new medium”?
It was odd to me that even when PCs were interacting, all of the conversation was directed at the DM. That’s not something I’ve seen before in a *World game.
My experience with *World has been in other games (Apoc World mostly, but also Monsterhearts, some Monster of the Week and a few *World hacks), so this could be a function of Dungeon World, too.
It wasn’t a deal-killer, just something that surprised me.

Richard Rogers I’m sure those factors had a lot to do with it. Personally, I didn’t notice the players not talking to each other, mostly because I was delighted by how everyone was embracing the lore-building aspects of some of the questions. There was a vividness to it that was really working for me. And now I have a lot of stuff to play with when it comes to prepping Session 2. As everyone gets more comfortable with each other, the player interaction will increase.
