After what was a very palpable sense of anticipation just before launching, and racing to its goal pretty quickly, the Undying Kickstarter seems to have lost momentum.

I’m not yet a backer, which is surprising since I get behind pretty much any promising indie RPG, especially if 1) my friends are excited about it and 2) RPG designers I admire recommend it. I think the hang-up I’m having is the level I want to back at is so expensive. I could easily back at the level where I get the PDF or the softcover, both of which are very reasonable in terms of the pledge level. But here’s the thing: if I’m going to settle for that, I can just buy it on DriveThru when it comes out.

I do Kickstarter because I want the cool, exclusive thing. But in this case, the cool, exclusive thing (hardcover; blood tokens) is going to run me nearly $100 after shipping.

Anyway, I’m keeping it starred, because the game does seem really damn cool. I may have a change of heart about it.

  1. Well if you back the project you can get the add on “The Grind” by John Harper. And Im aware how much you like his games from your podcast. Also, I like to give the money directly to the creators if I like a project. DriveThru, while a great service that I use, takes a cut.

  3. Gary Anastasio I think there is probably some bigger conversation about Kickstarter/Patreon fatigue that I want to have, but it’s ultimately not a conversation worth having, since the solution is so easy: if you’re over it, just don’t participate.

  5. Yeah I understand the burnout quality. I’ve significantly slowed down on my pledging. I really examine who is the creator since I’ve been burned in the past. Also my wallet needs a rest. My issue with Kickstarter is that a game that sounds fantastic today forces me to wait 4-6 months. By then im into something else. Sometimes its best to just procure the product through DriveThru. Unelss the game is ready now, I really have to weigh my interest level. In this weeks podcast you talked about having an honest conversation with yourself. I have that now ever time I go to push the KS backer button. Will I play it? Yes or no…

  7. The UK shipping will be crippling. I was expecting to wade in too but my vampire loving chum Isa Wills isn’t sure and without a vampire loving chum what have you got?

  9. I think if people don’t care about the hardback, they should definitely back at one of the lower pledge levels. The game looks really cool. I will probably end up backing at the PDF level, to be supportive, but missing the hardback will make me sad.

  11. Because I guess I’m a total sucker when it comes to limited edition, hardcover, Vampire: The Masquerade influenced, digest sized role-playing books.
