A quick announcement regarding our plans for running online games:

We will have a separate community, called Gauntlet Hangouts, where we will organize online and PbP games. Before I send out the invites, though, I”d like to get the initial slate of offerings ready to go.

Here is what I’d like to start with:

-A Saturday morning game run by me. It will be called Saturday Morning Cartoons, and it will be weekly, from 8 am to 11 am, starting July 11th.

-At least one other weekly Hangouts game. If you are interested in running that game, please let me know in the comments. A note for Houston Gauntlet: If you are currently involved in the DW Magic Item Project, or if you regularly attend/GM our FtF games, I will ask you to hold off on volunteering for now. This is in the interest of not spreading ourselves too thin.

-At least two PbP games. I know very little about running games PbP, so if you have experience with this, or if you’d like to volunteer to run something, please let me know.

I think that will be the extent of it for now, at least until the Community is built-up a bit.

  1. I’d certainly put my name in the hat for GM duties. I’d be inclined to go for Tuesday or Thursday evenings. I would not be able to commit to the point that I could consistently run the session but if we had a GM pool of some sort, I’d be happy to be part of that.

  3. I can’t commit to running anything just now (though maybe in a few months). I’m still definitely interested in playing.

I’ve been in a couple PbP games, but I’d hardly call myself all that experienced (both were pretty short-lived).

Absolutely invite me to that community. RE: PbP, I’ve had some experience with a lot of short-lived games, so…I guess I know a lot of potential pitfalls? They’re hard to keep going, though.

  7. i work Saturdays, so won’t be able to participate there

I would, however, be able to participate in the aforementioned gm pool for a weekday evening game

I have extremely limited experience as a player in a pbp game, so can’t offer much help or advice, but would be interested in joining in

either way I’d appreciate an invite to the community-thanks

  9. As for the PBP, I’m involved in a number of PBP games right now. If one dies down, I’ll volunteer to run a game for folks. G+ isn’t a super great place for PBP, tried it a couple times, it’s easy to lose the posts in the stream.

  11. Richard Rogers My hope is that if we keep the Hangouts community relatively “pristine” in terms of posts, we might be able to minimize the problem of games getting lost in the stream. So far, there are only categories for organizing games and PbP. I will be very aggressive in deleting the organizational posts after the game has made, so that should just leave the PbP as what people see when they log in.

  13. clearing out the unneccesary posts should help with PBP, Jason Cordova.

The main problem with G+ and PBP is that G+ is not designed for lengthy posts. A scene that runs more than 10 posts will be nigh impossible to keep up with on phone or through Jingle updates.

Also, the lack of a die roller is a hurdle.

These aren’t insurmountable, but they’re important factors when choosing a game.

  15. hmm…hadn’t really gotten that far in my thinking, and i guess it would depend on the format

i could easily facilitate/run fiasco, microscope, swords without master, psi run, or several other one off type games on an as needed basis if Sean Smith and perhaps others are able to share responsibilities

if you are intending more developed story arcs then i am currently most interested in apocalypse world, but also fate, dogs in the vineyard, feng shui, traveller, and perhaps a couple of others, although i only have any appreciable experience with fate-additionally, i can’t commit to any regular sessions until late summer because of work

what are your thoughts on recording these as hangouts on air and posting them to a Gauntlet youtube page?

  17. i suppose the honor system is an option for rolling dice for pbp-i can’t imagine many potential participants feeling the need to cheat in this case

  19. Richard Rogers A couple of years ago, we did “side quests” for the characters in our DW game via PbP on G+. I thought it worked pretty well. We had very specific rules for how to handle posts, which I think helped create some consistency. Now, granted, it was just me plus one other player (with occasional commentary by spectators), but it was a lot of fun. With more players, it might have been a total mess.

If anyone wants to check out the session I did with my gaming partner-in-crime, Daniel Lewis, it can be found here: https://plus.google.com/108530078404383929502/posts/RPxbvj1yifY

Please note: we know that just yelling “Discern Realities!” is not how you play DW. It was something of a joke for us back then.

  21. I could not follow that post link, Jason Cordova.

I’m not saying G+ PBP can’t be done. I’m detailing challenges to help with game choice. I’m a huge fan of PBP, and I’m happy to help make it happen in Gauntlet as much as I’m able.

  23. Richard Rogers Yeah, for sure; I definitely appreciate the insight. Like I said, it’s not something I have ever really done, apart from that DW spinoff from a couple of years ago.
