Episode 4 of the Gauntlet Podcast landed this morning. In the opening segment of this one, we have a terrific discussion about a game from UK Role Players called Cheat Your Own Adventure. The main topic for this week are what we call our gaming ‘old yellers,’ and what can be done about them. Enjoy!

Also, shout-out to Daniel Lewis: the audio quality and editing in this one are the best yet they have been.

“Old Yellers” are gaming dogs you don’t want to kill, but you have to? That is a grim, grim analogy.

Paul Czege Haha, your formulation of the analogy is better than ours. We were just going with “things that need to die.” But, yeah, this one is kind of the Gauntlet Grumpcast.

Funny you mention the audio quality, my reaction was “Oh my god, there’s so much noise” followed by immediately looking online for a new mixer.

Daniel Lewis Really? I listened to it in my car, which has a decent sound system, and it sounded pretty good to me.

It sounds better in a car than on headphones. There’s a little hum that the mic mixer puts into the signal that slowly drives me insane.

Aw, Dan cut out me being super-mean to a certain brand of Call of Cthulhu fan.
Probably for the best.

There’s a few cuts I can tell, but otherwise excellent job Dan! Looking forward to an even better next ep.
Listening to it before bed tonight, I have this to say:
I was affected by our 3rd story with “Cheat Your Own Adventure”, but possibly not in the same was as everyone else. I was very pleased with it, because the idea of Death, and being powerless in the face of it, is often a story that is rare to never told in company. To see everyone in the group not only participate in it, but also give such realistic and varied responses and idea, made me feel grateful to have found such an excellent group that is able to handle hard concepts such as this. Story Games are a medium to explore these ideas, and a way to deal with them in a space where you can at least control the window into them. I look forward to more games where we not only do comedy, but drama, and are able to have as wide a range of emotions & topics as any opera or novel.
