An idea I had for the Gauntlet Anthology is to play Our Last Best where the party is a bunch of adventurers trying to prevent some cataclysmic event (say, demons pouring out of a newly opened hellgate in the center of the capital city from over-running the country). Not sure how much modification OLB would require, but it’s worth looking into. I think it’ll be my next project.

  1. Specifically, in the Gauntlet Anthologies timeline there is a period of time called The Rending.  All we know about this time is:

    1) the first tear in the fabric of the Prime Material Plane appears and is the result of an alchemical experiment gone awry and 2) a rift opens beneath Kingsburg, the Capital of Vealun, the Seat of Men in the High Dale. The city is utterly destroyed by the demonic horde that pours from it.

This second event is what I would like to focus on for this game.  We don’t know what happens after the capital is overrun.  Perhaps a daring raid by even more daring adventurers manages to seal the rift before the demon horde can pillage the entire High Dale.  Or perhaps the saviors die ignominiously and the Vealun kingdom is broken and scattered for a thousand years before the demons recede into the darkness they came from and the humans once again are allowed to rule the High Dale.

After all, aren’t do-or-die, skin-of-our-teeth, catastrophe-averting adventures what Our Last Best Hope is for?
