Kristen Stewart, a mummy, and walk into a bar…
Last night was the first of what will hopefully be many sessions of Monsterhearts. Our characters were Wendy (the Mortal), Kharis (the Mummy) and Sebastian/Samantha (the Unseen). The first session was mostly just making the relationship web and homeroom seating chart. We also followed the characters around for a bit to see what kind of trouble they would get into.
Highlights:
-Kharis, who is always trying to reclaim his rightful place as ruler of the known world, is a member of the school wargaming club because it reminds him of the battles he used to wage in ancient times. He is also the head cheerleader, after having failed to be named quarterback of the football team. While not as desirable as being quarterback, it still gives him something to rule and he enjoys soaking up the adoration at the pep rallies.
-Sebastian, who cannot be seen, but whose name still shows up on test score rosters and whom teachers make reference to in class, is thought to be some weird homebound student. In fact, she is up in everyone’s business – stealing cell phones, blackmailing people, and running into a creepy (pervy?) new teacher while sneaking around the faculty lounge, and who can somehow see her and who wants to have after school counseling sessions.
-Wendy…poor Wendy. All she wants is to make Kharis love her, but he’s too wrapped-up in wargaming and seducing mathlete Corbett (to get him to do his homework). There’s also that trailer park skank, Shelley, who is throwing herself all over him. When she went to confront Shelley, she got her ass kicked. On top of everything else, she faces the constant needling of her stepmother and Promisekeeper half-sister, Christina. It sounds like she may have to go all “fake geek girl” and join the wargaming club to get closer to Kharis.
It was a lot of fun. Monsterhearts always delivers. Thanks to Ferrell Riley , Daniel Lewis and Derek Grimm .
Ah, it’s like high-school all over again!

I LOVE the idea the weirdness of that Unseen! That almost makes me want to get my colleagues to set up a hoax like that.

Also of note: Kharis, when he was a freshman, lobbied the administration to change the school colors from red & gold to purple & gold (purple being the color of royalty and more fit for him to wear).

The Unseen is definitely a challenge, and I hope Jason Cordova will enjoy both running me as well as seeing exactly how abusive the playbook can be. Both to the ruleset and other people.

Ferrell Riley Oh for sure. There is so much potential for the Unseen to end up being the big bad. It was apparent even from just last night that the skin is very challenging in the sense that you can’t just walk up to people and interact with them. And you are presently in Darkest Self. I expect the football game to be a catastrophe.

Ferrell Riley Also, I’m not sure if Daniel Lewis or Derek Grimm picked up on this, but it seems like the Unseen is a metaphor for school shooters. Thoughts?
