Gaming epiphany alert! Kerry Harrison , Trey Palmer , Daniel Lewis, Daniel Fowler , Alexander Hay , and Ian Hay
So, in MotW, you can actually make the Help move AFTER the person you intend to help has rolled. I have always been dissatisfied with the Aid/Hinder move in DW, but I think making this adjustment would really open it up a lot. And I think it’s completely in the spirit of the game: the person aiding/hindering is opening themselves up to retribution. You could also have neat risk/reward situations where the help target rolls a 9, and a decision has to be made about whether Help would be worth attempting.
The Bonds also instantly become more important.

Worth a try.

but no one will want to aid after they see someone roll two ones. there is always the possibility that something is realy important so we dedicate our characters to helping someone and then they flub. while this is not an outcome I enjoy it is part of the risk of aiding someone

Daniel Fowler I take your point, but I think it’s worth trying because, to this point, we basically have not been using the Aid/Hinder rules at all.

Possible mod to rule: if attempting to aid before action the aid is +2, if attempting to aid after action the aid is +1. Thoughts?

I think the bonds should be related.
like if I help you in a way that matches one of my bonds to you then it should get me an xp
I also like the idea of it being more helpful to aid before the roll then later. maybe the aid roll after the fact doesn’t benefit from the bonds

Seems like turning the aid move into a save move.

The important thing to remember is that we narrate AFTER the result has been settled on. So even if there is an Aid roll that feels more like a saving action (at the table) it would be narrated as help that had been offered all along (in the fiction). It’s not a distinction that means much in terms of strategy, but it means a lot in terms of the story, which is why I’m kind of ok with it.

Either way sounds good to me. Aid always struck me as helping someone in something they’re doing; sort of like holding the bottom of the ladder as someone climbs up. A save strikes me as trying to catch the person as they’re falling off a cliff face. I like the idea of giving some sort of bonus for aid or some sort of negative for saves that go bad. Don’t know if it matters if they’re treated as separate moves so much as separate motivations. And results.

Alexander Hay Agreed. I think here is how I will handle it: if you choose to do Aid/Hinder after the roll and you blow it (or the assisted player blows it), the consequences of my move will just be worse.
