Lessons from Doskvol

This last Friday marked the 16th session of our f2f Blades in the Dark campaign. In April, I begin an online Blades campaign using the Iruvia setting. I’ve found Blades easy to learn, but challenging to master. This post covers some lessons I’ve learned and things I’ve noted. YRMV but I want to point GMs (and players) to some considerations.

UNMASKINGS

For my month of Cypher System games on the Gauntlet Hangouts, I’m running three settings including the weird ’80’s teen secret supers game Unmasked. I used pre-gens for the other games, but for this I built the characters myself. That’s helped me figure out the system. Plus I dig the nuts & bolts of superhero games.

Hearts of Wulin: What’s Next?

I ran the last session of Hearts of Wulin PbtA yesterday. It tied together several character threads, put two PCs in the spotlight, and significantly changed some entanglements. My post has links to the session videos and my previous posts on the system. It also considers what I need to develop if I want to make this a full-fledged game. This isn’t everything, but its where I plan to start.

HEARTS OF WULIN: PLAYBOOKS

Here are the five playbooks we’ve used for our run-through of Hearts of Wulin. They’re pretty good for a first attempt. We have five options- Aware, Bravo, Loyal, Outsider, and Student. Each has three distinct variations with a unique move. The post has links to the other entries as well as the AP videos. Let me know what you think.

Lloyd Gyan this is probably enough to run from…

I’ve run two sessions so far of my wuxia PbtA hack, Hearts of Wulin. It’s a project in progress, but I’m digging the play we’ve had. In my post I go over the basics of the system, next time I’ll go over the playbooks. Take a look and check out the session videos if that’s your jam.

Mystery Academy: The Next Generation

In this post I look at the actual setting, premise, and background for our sessions of this Masks hack. I talk about other ways you could go with this premise. Last time I covered the mechanics we used. This post also considers what worked and didn’t work for the hack, and what changes need to be made before I run it again. I think between these two posts you probably have enough to run from.

On the podcast this week I talked about running Neo Shinobi Vendetta, a Fate hack. I’ve posted all the pre-gens for that; the players picked the first four of the six. They only have a couple of aspects– I left the others blank. They could add an aspect to an open slot at any time and get an immediate fate point.

THE MARCH TO GAMERDOM

Just a heads up as we head into February and GMs begin to post games for April– we still have room for games in March. If you’re thinking about running a game for The Gauntlet check out the monthly calendar. You can see there which nights & days have fewer games.

If you’re thinking about running a Gauntlet game, I’d be glad to help you out. I can direct you to our online resources & videos, and I’d be glad to chat with you one-on-one if you’d like.
