Presently reading through Urban Shadows in preparation for tomorrow’s kickoff. Andrew Medeiros and Mark Diaz Truman deserve a ton of credit for writing a book that clearly explains how PbtA games are supposed to work. A lot of this is information we have had to learn over the course of playing many different games. This book is a fantastic guide for how all of these games work. Very impressive, and recommended reading for someone looking to get into PbtA.

Here’s a pitfall of running a game online (at least for me): it’s much harder to read the table. FtF, I’m pretty good at assessing how a thing is going over, and adjusting on the fly as necessary. I feel a little vulnerable as a GM in the online play space, because I don’t have access to the same (for lack of a better way of putting it) “table energy.” It’s a learning process like anything else, I guess.

I suspect the bridge between GM inputs and player expectations is crossed more easily online by everyone at the table being more vocal. If a thing is not working, we should stop and fix it. No one’s feelings are going to be hurt (least of all mine).

Above all, I want people to feel like they are contributing productively to the fiction. If, as the GM, I am fucking that up, I really want to know about it.

Hi Everyone.

Hi Everyone.

Hi Everyone. I have added a new Thursday night event to Gauntlet Hangounts. It is called TGI Thursday. We are starting with a five-session run of Monster of the Week. Everyone is invited. This first session is 7pm-10pm Central. All future sessions will be 7pm-10pm Eastern. If there isn’t enough interest in a Thursday night game, I will look at changing the day, but I’d like to give this a shot for now.

Also, if you have not joined Gauntlet Hangouts, you should really do so. Our FtF weekly event, Story Game Sunday, is going completely Hangouts starting later next month. That means our weekly Hangouts slate will be TGI Thursday, Saturday Morning Cartoons, and Story Game Sunday. Additionally, I will be organizing round table RPG discussions, also starting in late September.

Can you think of a really underrated game mechanic? Here is what I mean: I think the way The Burning Wheel abstracts money is fucking brilliant, but all you ever hear about with that game is the Belief system or The Duel of Wits.

What is a really underrated game mechanic, and why is it so brilliant?

Google has managed to interpret my searches for “old school roleplaying games” and “old school renaissance” as “old school hip-hop and R&B.” So, in my G+ stream, sandwiched between all the RPG people and right-wing lunatics (don’t ask) are posts about BoyzIIMen and Mary J. Blige.

This week’s episode of The Gauntlet Podcast is pretty terrific. We did an interview with Paul Czege from Halfmeme Press. We talk about the #Threeforged  game design challenge, his game The Clay that Woke, and other (mostly) RPG-related topics. I hope you enjoy it!
