History of Licensed RPGs (Part IV 1990-92)

I’ve posted the next installment in my lists on The Gauntlet blog. I continue to be surprised at the # of licensed games from this era- and the # of second bites at the apple.

The Farrier’s Bellows is here!

The Farrier’s Bellows is here!

The Farrier’s Bellows is here!

We are launching a brand-new podcast today! The Farrier’s Bellows is all about story games, and the first episode focuses on the Forge-era classic, InSpectres! The show was designed to be a sister podcast to Fear of a Black Dragon, and so you’ll notice some similarities between their formats.

As usual, it takes a few days for the podcast to show up on iTunes and Google Play. We’ll update this post with links once we have them. In the meantime, you can listen to the show on our site (linked below) or find it in your podcatcher app by using this URL (be sure to enter it precisely as you see it):

Hey Gauntleteers, it’s time to crowdsource the miscellany for Codex – Screams.

Hey Gauntleteers, it’s time to crowdsource the miscellany for Codex – Screams.

Hey Gauntleteers, it’s time to crowdsource the miscellany for Codex – Screams. This miscellany is called “Three Dozen Things That Definitely Aren’t Right Behind You.” Submissions need to be a single sentence, or 2-3 short sentences. By submitting here, you’re agreeing to let us use it (you’ll get a credit on the issue). We’re looking for evocative things; the purpose of the miscellany is to inspire the reader.

Here are some examples:

“They look almost like wolves, and speak with the voices of those climbers have lost. It can’t be your grandmother asking you to rest for a moment and spare her poor knees, but oh, it’s nice to pretend.”

“Most of the records are corrupted, but the recoverable portion from this workstation details the medical staff’s surprise at finding a local fungus pervading the internal organs—particularly the lungs—of a mechanic who should have had no exposure to the botany lab. …Did Higgins have that cough before you got here?”

“The Ragged Man of Copper Creek resembles a cloth doll made by someone with only the faintest grasp of sewing. Loose threads trail from his mismatched arms and unhemmed suit, waiting to entangle anyone who stumbles across him.”

P.S. If you want to be credited as something other than your G+ name, let me know!

We had our second session of Cryptomancer on Sunday. It was absolutely my jam: info gathering, plotting, problem solving, new complications. Really fun. This particular scenario’s what I call a Conspiracy Sandbox. I wrote up a post explaining what that means: https://www.gauntlet-rpg.com/blog/age-of-ravens-conspiracy-sandbox

The newest episode of The Gauntlet Podcast is out now! In this one, Lowell and I are joined by Jesse Ross.

In this episode, we begin our brand-new format for the show. In the first segment, we’re discussing City of Mist, Girl Underground, and Hot Guys Making Out: Sherlock. In the new guest segment, Jesse talks about Trophy and the idea of mining dark fantasy for new ideas. This episode is honestly so fantastic (helped greatly by the sharp edit done by Paul). The conversation is very rich and textured throughout. This is, frankly, the cutting edge of ttrpg discussion and thought.

Enjoy!
